Richard I was King of England from 6 July 1189 until his death. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lionor Richard the Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. By the age of 16, Richard had taken command of his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, The traditional image of Richard the Lion-heart, the second Plantagenet king of England, has come to us through the centuries, as a glorious crusader and knight. Captured by the Austrian emperor, he was later rescued by the young troubadour Blondel who discover Richard when singing a famous ballade. Richard was called Lionheart at the beginning of the Third Crusade when Philip of France was compared with a lamb and Richard with a lion.
