With the increasing sturdiness of plate armor, the became less and less effective against a fully armored knight. Hammers, , and maces soon became the weapon of choice for hand-to-hand combat of the mounted knight. The war hammer quickly evolved and became one of the premier . Generally, it was lighter and faster than the mace. Often it was made somewhat longer so that the reach could be extended, but shortened as well if need be.

Game Of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire
The Warhammer of King Robert I Baratheon
Officially licensed product from the Fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.
Young, boisterous Robert Baratheon's chosen was a war hammer so massive that even his childhood friend and brother-in-arms Ned Stark could not wield it. It had been forged at Storm's End, the ancestral seat of House Baratheon, and Robert's prowess with it was legendary.
Robert's Rebellion, partly triggered by the alleged abduction of Lyanna Stark (his betrothed and Ned's sister) by the heir to the throne Rhaegar Targaryen, brought four major houses of Westeros - Baratheon, Stark, Tully and Arryn - together against the ruling dynasty. At the decisive Battle of the Trident, where Prince Rhaegar's army met the rebel forces, it was this very hammer that Lord Robert carried at his side. Both men engaged in a fierce single combat, and despite being wounded, Robert eventually ended the Targaryen rule by slaying Rhaegar with a crushing, single blow to the chest.
This exclusive, officially licensed King Robert Baratheon's Warhammer was created from the fantasy world of author George R.R. Martin's best-selling saga A Song of Ice and Fire (adapted into HBO's hit TV series Game of Thrones®).
This highly collectible piece was meticulously designed based on George R.R. Martin's extensive notes and descriptions. It has been crafted with close attention to detail and no effort was spared to achieve the most possible authentic rendition of the item described in the source material.

Italian Da Carrara Horseman's Pick with Beast Motif, 14th Century
The hammer is one of the oldest Germanic blunt and the war hammer enjoyed great popularity in the Middle Ages owing to its extreme effectiveness.
It notably saw service with the cavalry from the 13th century onwards. As steel had increasingly become more elaborate and thicker over time, the so-called horseman's pick proved to be exceptionally valuable thanks to its weight and its ability to pierce and crush even the heaviest of armour.
The raven's beak or bec de corbin is a late medieval version of this polearm. Especially the spike from which it derived its name made this impact weapon a powerful instrument against well-armoured opponents, capable of penetrating thick plate armour or mail.
This replica of a 14th c. Italian hammer features an animal-like figure with a gaping mouth. The hammer head sticks out from the beast's wide open mouth, while the sharp, downward curved spike represents the creature's tail. The beast (incl. the socket) is made of brass, and the protruding hammer head as well as the spike are forged from steel. The wooden shaft is riveted to the head and equipped with a brass butt cap.

By the mid-1400s, armor had developed to the point that it was almost impervious to a blow. That's when the knight or man-at-arms would reach for a good, solid war hammer. With sound blows, armor could be damaged and crushed, sorely affecting movement and the ability to defend one’s self. This hammer has a large end spike as well as small spikes on the sides. The back spike is thick and able to punch through armor. The head is attached with steel langets to the hardwood shaft, which is also studded for a secure grip.
