Broken Back Seax, Viking Sax Knife, Damascus Steel
Broken Back Seax, Viking Knife with Damascus Steel Blade and Wood-and-Bone Handle This hand-made Viking Age sax knife, known as a broken back seax owing to its particular blade shape, features a sharpened 256-layer Damascus steel* blade and a wood-and-bone handle with brass collar and butt cap. The butt cap is equipped with a convenient eyelet for threading a lanyard or drawing the knife from its sheath (a leather lanyard is included in delivery). The short seax comes with a beautiful vegetable tanned, hand-dyed leather sheath with ornate brass fittings. The strap divider was designed to allow for an optimal positioning of each individual strap, so that the or the seax could hang from the belt at the perfect angle to be drawn from its sheath quickly. This scramasax is designed as a collector’s or decoration/display piece. *The terms Damascus steel, damascene or pattern welded designate a compound steel forged out of two or more different types of steel. It is named after its birthplace, the Syrian city of Damascus, a former stronghold of the patterned steel production. As a common practice, a harder high carbon steel and a milder low carbon steel are repeatedly forge welded and folded together. The high carbon steel ensures a higher hardness, a better temperability and longer lasting edge retention, whereas the milder steel confers greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This procedure, which arose in a time where steel qualities were often low and inconsistent, enables to combine the positive attributes of the various steel grades. Besides, the different shadings generated by the varying carbon content of the alternating layers engender strikingly beautiful patterns, such as the twisted motif called Torsion Damascus pattern or the Rose Damascus pattern. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why inherent magical properties were attributed to the Damascus steel blades of the Middle Ages. Details: - Blade material: Damascus steel (4340 and 1070 steel, 256 layers), sharp edge - Overall length: approx. 32 cm - Blade length: approx. 19 cm - Weight: approx. 230 g (approx. 430 g with sheath) - Leather-and-brass sheath with hanger Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece. Viking Long Seax with Bone Grip in Jellinge Style, 10th c.
Long Seax, Viking Sax Knife, Bone Handle with Norse Motif in Jellinge Style, 10th c. This Viking Age sax knife or scramasax features a long EN45 spring steel blade with a thick spine and a pointed tip. On both sides, twin fullers run the top half of the blade along the spine and end about two thirds down its length. The eye-catching, gorgeous grip is made of polished bone. It is adorned with engravings in Jelling (also: Jellinge) style, a 10th century Norse art style typically characterized by intertwined, band-shaped / ribbon animals with striated bodies, usually depicted in profile. The motif (a pair of S-shaped, interlocked dragons or serpents) is based on the designs that can be seen on the famous 10th c. silver cup from Jelling, which gave its name to this particular Viking art style and is now part of the collection of the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. The long Viking seax comes with a beautiful sheath made of 3 mm thick, vegetable tanned leather with antiqued brass fittings, including three hanging rings. The bottom metal strip that terminates with an animal (possibly a wolf’s) head finial is loosely based on an 8th c. Middle Anglo-Saxon find retrieved from the River Thames in London in the 19th c. and believed to have been part of a knife or seax scabbard mount. It also features a runic inscription that has not been satisfactorily interpreted to this day. The original piece is held in the British Museum (no. 1869,0610.1). This Viking knife is designed as a collectible, decoration piece or prop. The blade’s point is not rounded, and the edge is not sharpened, yet slithtly ground (approx. 0.5 to 1 mm thick). Long Seax, Viking Sax Knife, Bone Handle with Norse Ravens Hugin and Munin This Viking Age sax knife (also known as a broken back seax owing to its particular blade shape) has a long, hand-forged high carbon steel blade with a thick spine. The blade is not fully polished and still shows the oxide scale layer and forging marks on the flats, which lends the knife a rustic, authentic character. The eye-catching grip is downright gorgeous: It is made of polished bone and artfully adorned with etched designs depicting Odin's two faithful messenger ravens, Hugin and Munin (or Huginn and Muninn), with their names in Norse runes. In Norse mythology, the ravens fly over Asgard and Midgard and return every evening to the Allfather of the Gods (also referred to as Hrafnáss, the "raven god") to tell him everything they have seen and heard. The two birds are a recurring motif in Celtic and Viking art. The long Viking seax comes with a beautiful sheath made of thick, vegetable tanned leather with hand-tooled period Norse knotwork designs and antiqued brass fittings, including two hanging rings. The twin bird motif found on the handle is repeated on one side of the sheath. Each raven is cast from brass and fastened with rivets. Although fully functional, the Viking knife has a just slightly sharpened edge which may have to be re-ground to improve sharpness if needed. Please note that this scramasax is primarily designed as a collector's or decoration piece and by no means suited for combat reenactment! Details: - Blade material: high carbon steel (not stainless) - Handle material: animal bone - Overall length: approx. 48 cm - Blade length: approx. 33 cm - Blade width: approx. 3.5 cm - Blade thickness: approx. 4 mm (approx. 3 mm towards the point) - Weight: approx. 575 g (approx. 855 g with sheath) - Leather-and-brass sheath with carrying rings Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
